John Carter vs. The White Ape by aaronlopresti John Carter vs. The White Ape by aaronlopresti
I recently did this John Carter piece in my sketchbook. I may take this to finish or try a couple of more designs first.

Sincerest tip of the hat - OUTSTANDING pencils! Beyond 'sketchy' and yet raw to avoid falling into 'tight pencils' cathegory. Totally nailed ERB atmosphere and context!

Thanks. I often find it challenging to keep my pencils loose. I prefer that look but years of tight penciling for inkers makes it difficult at times to loosen up and just draw.

No matter how much I also tend to appreciate tight pencils done by some incredible artists, the question remains: why ink them, why not using scans of them only - coloured or not - instead of going 'Chasing Amy' [the proverbial discussion about inkers as 'tracers'].

I believe that the time of loose[r] penciling is coming back.
Thanks for the reply!

No one has any taste...I havent seen John Carter yet but it has been so unsuccessful it may not even reach my small local cinema.

Find a way to see it on the big screen. It is really good. I am admittedly a bit bias because of my love of the source material but even my much more skeptical 18 year old son liked it. It is a tragic example of a good movie failing because of terrible marketing.

I hoped that was the case given the track record and enthusiasm of the director. I have checked and it is coming to our local cinema.

When i first saw this I thought Barry Windsor Smith had joined DA (which I hope is a compliment to you) then I saw your name and just thought wow, it's another amazing artist I hadn't seen for a while. I love the line work in your sketches Aaron.

Pleasure is mine. You have a nice classic frazetta vibe going on in your work. If you were around 40 years sooner you'd be on the Frazetta, Wrightson,Neil Adams, Corben list of folks people idolized.
