This is the final version of the HTTYD cover I did. I did a fairly elaborate patch of Hiccup that I pasted in on photoshop. I haven't seen the colored version of this but I have a sinking feeling I am going to wish I had colored it myself. We'll see.

Well, hopefully you didn't hate the way that I colored it...but in my defense I had half a day to turn in the colors ;) [link]

Nice stuff (both of them) . . . and while I do like them BOTH, I guess after reading some of the books with my son, it's not a big surprise they picked the "lighter" one.

Yeah, I haven't read one yet but it makes sense that the first one my be too intense for what they are going for. The second one I did is much lighter, if that is possible:)

I read them with my son occasionally, and they are quite light . . . and in a lot of ways, the actual novels are very different from the movie or current cartoon.

Nice stuff!

Oh and for what it's worth . . . just finished up a new Comic Book Storytellers video . . . if you have a second . . . love to hear a professionals 2 cents!?!?! And if you like it . . . appreciate any shares!

I watched your video and thought it was good. It is funny how often the word deadline came up. It's really true. Unfortunately for me I often realize my mistakes a couple of days after the artwork is out the door:)

It goes to show you. The customer isn't always right! This is so boring compared to your original version, it makes me want to go to the publisher and give them a piece of my mind.

I've worked in marketing and publishing for many years as a designer and illustrator, and I swear some of the people who make these decisions belong in an institution for the mentally incompetent for crimes against creativity.

Oh well, as they say, that's life! It's still a great drawing as always, on your part, despite the lack of sense of wonder and adventure you had with the original.

I rarely agree on editorial cover choices. But it could be that I am so used to 30 somethings and up reading comics that I have lost touch with what is right for little kids. Which is apparently their audience.

I think kids have an excellent sense of design. Adults mess it up by giving them badly design coloring books, pictures, etc. I taught drawing to kids and they, unlike teens, see the whole page as part of the artwork. I should post some of the pieces my daughter did when she was between 4 and 10. Amazing stuff!
